Water! Earth! Fire! Air!
These are the four elements of four nations that lived in harmony in the legendary land of the show Avatar: The Last Airbender.
Aang, Katara, Sokka, and Toph journeyed together to defeat Firelord Izo. Now it is your turn! Master water, earth, and air to defeat the Fire Nation! Dundundun…
Just kidding. The competition isn’t really avatar-based, more engineer-based.
The WAL (Water-Air-Land) Competition is a engineering competition during which a three-person team is required to build a boat; a catapult, trebuchet, or batista; and a mousetrap car. The overall winner and the winner of each round will win a prize.
WATER LEVEL:
Use differ…ent materials to build a boat that carries the most weight in pennies!
Scoring: The score given will be the number of pennies the boat can carry.
AIR LEVEL:
Build some sort of launching mechanism (catapult, trebuchet, or batista) that is accurate enough to hit a target — bulleye is the highest score! Each team will launch five marbles from six feet away.
Scoring:
– Bullseye: 2 in diameter; 100 points
– Ring 1: 5 in diameter; 70 points
– Ring 2: 7 in diameter; 50 points
– Ring 3: 10 in diameter; 30 points
– Ring 4: 18 in diameter; 10 points
LAND LEVEL (Earth Level):
Build a mousetrap car and race it!
Scoring: The distance in centimeters is the score.
For the overall winner, each level’s score will be scaled to make each level equally important.
PRIZES:
Each member of the winning team receives a video game!
