StudentRND a new haven for fine art

StudentRND is known for being a center for science and technology but did you know that we also have a taste for fine art?

On August 19, 2010 at approximately 3 PM, StudentRND paved the way (not really) for high quality 3D printing as demonstrated by a near perfect replica of the famous Michelangelo’s David. Note the detailed intricacies on his face, his rock hard six pack abs and his long flowing hair.

Perhaps something that is easy to overlook at first is the modern spin StudentRND has put on fine art. Take a closer look at this statue and see if you can pinpoint the slight modification StudentRND has made to this statue. Still don’t see it?

Take a closer look at David’s left arm. That’s right! To the trained eye, you can certainly tell that his arm is lowered about an inch (in scale) than the original David. This corrects the original error by Michelangelo when originally sculpting this to proportions. Also, to promote racial equality, we have made David black.

If you would like to purchase this sculpture, it will be on sale for the low price of $3,999.99. Please contact Edward Jiang for more details.

NEW SUMMER HOURS!

I can’t wake up early. You can’t wake up early.

So, what we decided to do is push RND back two hours! StudentRND will not be open from 11:00am to 7:00pm instead of 9:00am to 5:00pm. (: Awesome, no? Time to sleep in!

Also, quite sadly, we will no longer be open Sunday. Saturdays are still free for all, though! So come join us for some summer fun!

VP here, VP there, VP everwhere ~!

Congrats to our new VP Business Relations, Dixon Liang, and new VP Finance, Daniel Goundry! Welcome on board, guys! Look for their bios soon on the Leadership page!

Anyway, have you fallen in love with StudentRND after you visited our Workspace? Want to get more involved? StudentRND is currently looking for a VP Workspace. The VP Workspace will be responsible for supervising projects in the workshop and working with other departments to create a budget for the workshop each year. The VP Workspace should also work on independent projects as samples for students who come to the workspace. During the school year and into the summer, the VP Workspace works with the VP Marketing to plan and publicize the calendar of events (such as fun nights, lessons, etc.). Apply here!

Avatar Competition.

Water! Earth! Fire! Air!

These are the four elements of four nations that lived in harmony in the legendary land of the show Avatar: The Last Airbender.

Aang, Katara, Sokka, and Toph journeyed together to defeat Firelord Izo. Now it is your turn! Master water, earth, and air to defeat the Fire Nation! Dundundun…

Just kidding. The competition isn’t really avatar-based, more engineer-based.

The WAL (Water-Air-Land) Competition is a engineering competition during which a three-person team is required to build a boat; a catapult, trebuchet, or batista; and a mousetrap car. The overall winner and the winner of each round will win a prize.

WATER LEVEL:
Use differ…ent materials to build a boat that carries the most weight in pennies!
Scoring: The score given will be the number of pennies the boat can carry.

AIR LEVEL:
Build some sort of launching mechanism (catapult, trebuchet, or batista) that is accurate enough to hit a target — bulleye is the highest score! Each team will launch five marbles from six feet away.
Scoring:
– Bullseye: 2 in diameter; 100 points
– Ring 1: 5 in diameter; 70 points
– Ring 2: 7 in diameter; 50 points
– Ring 3: 10 in diameter; 30 points
– Ring 4: 18 in diameter; 10 points

LAND LEVEL (Earth Level):
Build a mousetrap car and race it!
Scoring: The distance in centimeters is the score.

For the overall winner, each level’s score will be scaled to make each level equally important.

PRIZES:
Each member of the winning team receives a video game!

Stop by StudentRND THIS SATURDAY (June 24th!) at 1pm and join us! (:

I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream!

Helloooo world! It’s summer in Seattle and StudentRND has apparently gone bonkers for ice cream. This is the THIRD time we’re having an ice cream social event… except this time, we’re not making the ice cream itself — we’re making ice cream masterpieces as well as root beer floats.

Join us this Friday to top your ice cream with junky food or submerge it in fizzy root beer. Maybe try some green tea ice cream with chocolate syrup and strawberries? Who knows!

Ice Cream!

It was 85 degrees today! Luckily, we have air conditioning at StudentRND, and to top it off — we made ice cream with dry ice as well as ice and rock salt.

Ed smashes the dry ice so we can use it to freeze the milk/vanilla/sugar mix!

While most of us made ice cream, some with dry ice, some with ice and rock salt, Adam and Marshall proceeded to force the coins into the dry ice, which makes a singing sound (find out why under the Singing Spoon section of this page).

Adam also decided to put the dry ice directly in his milk/vanilla/sugar mix! Bubbles!

*Help with getting started:

Chase Community Giving

When I first heard about the Chase Community Giving application, I immediately emailed Chase to get our organization added into the program. I never got a response from them, so I never had a reason to check back on the application.

However, yesterday I got a notification from Evelyn Laminack about StudentRND being on the Chase Community Giving application!

This is an incredible opportunity.

Chase will be giving $25,000 to 100 nonprofits with a budget under $10m.

This can be us. We can be in the top 100.

Currently, over 300,000 people have voted in the Chase Community Giving application. 1% of that is 3,000. However, there are over 500,000 organizations in the database. That’s an incredible number.

I believe if we can get 3,000 votes by December 11th, we have an excellent chance of getting into the top 100 organizations and receive the grant.

This will be a difficult endeavor. However, I believe with enough focus and determination, we can get this done.

To do this, we should have a multifaceted campaign:

1. In-Facebook Campaigning
We’ll create an event and invite everyone we know to the event. This is an easy way to get people to see our voting thing. It’s going to be easy to invite everyone we know to the event, due to the “invite everyone on your friends list” trick.

2. High School Campaigning
We definitely need people to talk to others, post up fliers, etc, at high schools. Tim should be creating fliers within this week. If you have a in-school club/group or facebook group/page that gets reach to high schoolers, we definitely need to send out communication to the members to help us. If you know anyone who has this type of reach, that works even better.

3. College Campaigning
We have only set up the leadership team for StudentRND UW so far, but we can still create a huge impact on the college level. We could combine this with our recruiting efforts and go around and tell people about our organization and mission, as well as give them a quick and easy way for them to help us. Even if we need to go door to door at the dorms, I believe we can mass a good number of votes through the effort of the leadership team and people that we may recruit.

As I said earlier, this will be a difficult task, but we can do it!

September 19th Letter to Volunteers

Dear Student,

I’m excited to see you become a part of StudentRND over the upcoming year! Together, we can build our new-age library – the Workshop, and inspire students to learn more about science and technology!

Over the school year, we’ll focus on making the Workshop a reality. To do so, we’ll need three things: space, money, and a set of policies, rules, and procedures for the Workshop.

Currently, we’re in talks with the Redmond/Sammamish Boys and Girls Club to use the upcoming Sammamish Community Center as a space. This is nowhere near certain though, but certainly is a first step! Otherwise, we’re hoping that corporations or other organizations may let us use their space next year.

We also have raised over $3,300 over the last year, although $1,100 was spent over the last summer. We need a minimum of $6,000 before next summer to operate. (That means we still need to raise at least $3,800!)

We also need to devise a set of rules, policies, and procedures for the Workshop next year. Otherwise, what’s to prevent one person from abusing the equipment?

That’s where you come in. We need to accomplish these goals, and get the Workshop running by next summer. We need to fundraise, write grants, talk to local companies about our mission, get publicity, etc. There’s so much to be done, and can be done. Together, we can accomplish.

Sincerely,

Edward Jiang, CEO
